Banking details problems are the most common reason an approved SRD grant does not pay. If you need to update your details, there is one correct place to do it and a long list of wrong ones. This article covers both.
Where to change your SRD banking details
Only one place can update your SRD banking details: SASSA’s official SRD website at srd.sassa.gov.za.
There is no other official route. You cannot change your banking details at a SASSA office, through a third-party app, or by sending your details to a number on social media. If someone tells you they can change your details for a fee, they cannot.
The process is straightforward. Log in with your South African ID number and the cellphone number linked to your application. Locate the banking details section and enter the new account information.
One rule applies without exception: the bank account must be in your own name. SASSA does not pay into accounts belonging to a spouse, a parent, a friend, or an employer. If the account is not yours, the change will not go through.
What happens after you submit the change
Do not expect your next payment to land immediately. SASSA runs a verification process after every banking detail change. This takes time, and your payment pauses while it runs.
The verification checks two things. First, that the account number belongs to the person whose ID number is on the application. Second, that the account is active and can receive payments.
During this period, your status may still show “approved” but no payment date will appear. That is expected. The payment has not been delayed because of an error. It is on hold until the verification completes.
Once verification passes, payment resumes on the next available run. You do not need to contact SASSA during this time unless several weeks pass with no update.
If verification fails, SASSA will show a reason on the status result. The most common reasons are that the account name does not match the ID number or that the account cannot accept electronic payments.
How to follow your status while you wait
While verification runs, check your status regularly. Use MySRD, an independent information website that is not connected to SASSA or government. It shows the current result from SASSA’s system for your ID number. You will be able to see when verification clears and when a payment date appears.
If you see an error or an unexpected decline after submitting new banking details, contact SASSA directly before submitting anything again.

What SASSA will never ask you for
This is the part that matters most.
South Africa has a serious problem with grant fraud. Scammers target SRD applicants specifically because millions of people are watching their phones for payment updates. Fake SASSA messages are designed to look real. Some of them are very convincing.
SASSA will never contact you by phone, SMS or WhatsApp to ask for any of the following:
- Your banking PIN
- Your banking password or internet banking login
- Your card number
- Your card expiry date or CVV number
- A one-time PIN (OTP) sent to your phone
- Your SASSA account password
There is no exception to this. SASSA does not need your PIN to process a payment. No legitimate system does. If anyone asks for any of these things while claiming to be SASSA, it is a scam.
Hang up, do not reply, and do not click any link in the message.
Common scams targeting SRD applicants
The “your details need updating” SMS. You receive a message saying your banking details are incorrect and you must click a link to fix them. The link takes you to a page that looks like SASSA’s site. It is not. Everything you enter goes straight to the scammer.
The “SASSA agent” phone call. Someone phones you and says they are from SASSA. They ask you to confirm your banking details or read out an OTP. SASSA agents do not call beneficiaries to verify banking details.
The paid update service. A person on social media or at a taxi rank offers to change your SASSA banking details for a fee of R50, R100 or more. They either do nothing, or they change your details to their own account.
The cloned status-check site. A site that looks like an official SASSA page asks for your ID number and banking details to verify your account. SASSA’s status check only needs your ID number. It will never ask for banking information.
If you think your details were changed without your knowledge
Contact SASSA immediately.

Report it. Ask SASSA to freeze any pending payment while the issue is investigated. Also report the scam to the South African Police Service.
Do not wait. If a scammer has changed your banking details, every day of delay brings a payment closer to landing in the wrong account.
